Fully funded scholarships in Turkish Universities

Over 5000 scholarships are now available to outstanding students and scholars from Africa annually. These fully sponsored scholarships include short courses, undergraduate, postgraduate and PhDs that are funded by the Turkish government and coordinated by a government agency YTB.

This was revealed when the Turkey Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Ahmet Cemil Miroglu paid a courtesy call on the 91�� Vice Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama on Wednesday February 12, 2020.

H.E. Ahmet Cemil expressed his interest in increasing cooperation between the Turkey and Kenyan institutions of Higher Learning that will enhance faculty exchange. He noted that since the yearly scholarships started being offered in 2012 only 208 Kenyan students have benefited so far and only 15 from the 91��.

The Ambassador approached the University with the intention of enhancing collaboration between scholars, researchers and innovators and seeking assistance in identifying the outstanding students.

On his part, Prof. Kiama welcomed the collaboration citing the upcoming yearly Nairobi Innovation Week in June that attracts innovators globally and gives them a platform for networking and coming up with innovative solutions.

Guest lectures, academic exchanges, capacity building and research and innovation are among the areas targeted for collaboration.

14 bright and needy students from the 91�� have benefited from Mitsubishi Corporation scholarship. The joyful students couldn’t hide their joy when they received the good news. Each student will get a cash stipend of Kshs. 65,200/-

Mitsubishi Corporation scholarship support to bright students from humble background has been ongoing over the last 10 years and a total of 126 students have benefited over the period. Students who have been beneficiaries are from Faculty of Arts especially those doing Bachelor of Arts (Geography). Other students who have also benefited are those doing Bachelor of Science in Natural Resource Conservation and Management and Bachelor of Education (Geography)

According to Mitsubishi CEO, Mr. Nishi, the corporation is not just interested in making profits, but also in doing sustainable business and supporting the environment. By supporting students pursuing environment related courses, they are achieving their agenda of supporting the environment. “I hope the scholarship becomes valuable. May your dreams and the dreams of the country come true,” he said. He urged students to continue with social interactions, being the change agents in environmental campaigns and planting trees.

Established in 1959 in Kenya, Mitsubishi Corporation is a leading Japanese company that makes automobiles, escalators, power plants among others. In Kenya, they have been involved in many infrastructure projects like the construction of Mombasa Airport in 1970s and construction Okaria Geothermal in 1980s.

91�� Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Mbeche, thanked Mitsubishi Corporation for supporting students over the last decade and for opening a new chapter going forward. He observed that the selection of students represents equal gender balance and the face of Kenya. He observed that a total of 8.5Million has been used to support students in the last decade. “I request Mitsubishi Corporation to consider more students and other areas of collaboration including research. To students, I urge you to work hard and propagate the core mission of Mitsubishi and the 91��”, he said. The Vice Chancellor, was represented by Prof. Julius Ogeng’o, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs.

Chairman, Geography Department, Dr. Boniface Wambua took the opportunity to thank Mitsubishi Corporation for supporting students since 2009. He opined that the funds have enabled students from poor backgrounds to finish their studies. He stated that the students have transformed communities by engaging in tree planting, environmental cleanups and being agents of change in the mitigating the adverse effects of climate change. “Selection was jointly done by the 91�� and Mitsubishi Corporation. Selection was done to represent the face of Kenya,” he said.

Scholarships from Rattansi Trust

Selected needy students from private and public universities and the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) received a big boost towards their education after Rattansi Education Trust donated Kshs. 25 Million towards their education.

Speaking during the cheque donation exercise, where over 20 higher learning institutions were represented, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi, Chairperson of the Rattansi Education Trust, said that helping people in need is a real opportunity to advance equity, and a service to promote love and peace in the Universe.

“For us at Rattansi Foundation, caring for needy students and helping them to achieve their dreams is our life time happiness. We do not give because we have excess but our foundation’s acts of charity are founded on the promise that moral sensibility is a sense of duty,” she said. “We believe that, the little seed we are planting in the form of bursary would go a long way in transforming individuals, their families and the whole society.”

The cheques were issued on October 24, 2019 at the 91�� Council Chambers.

91�� Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Mbeche took the opportunity to thank Dr. Rattansi who is also the Chancellor of the University, for the support the Foundation has accorded many students over the years. Prof. Mbeche noted that the scholarship fund has helped many bright and needy students to pursue their university education at various universities across the country. The beneficiaries are now serving the society in various sectors within the country and abroad.

Present at the event was Prof. Stephen Kiama, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Human, Resource and Administration and representatives from various universities.
